The atmosphere in Indian Wells has become considerably tense as a result of what happened. The discontent among the players is significant, due to the feeling of having been overheard without knowing. Meanwhile Pegula confirmed that she personally contacted the individuals involved to apologize.

Yeah, this whole thing sucks.
The WTA not informing the players that they were being streamed live is a massive misstep.

I think they knew about streaming but the hot mics are not normal at all for that setup.

Yes, the audio component is what I meant. Should have specified.

Really? I don’t watch live training, but I assumed they would just use the match setups for the outer courts when there are no camera men/commentators. I remember watching matches on the outer courts in early rounds in slams on bein (and maybe Stan) and they would just switch camera angles randomly.

Practice session live streams are common at the slams and some other tournaments? They are not unheard of.

I genuinely don’t know. I only watch matches and a few press conferences. I just thought instead of having camera men, they’d use the already set up camera system which includes the mics, so it wasn’t surprising to me that a mic picked something up

There is normally enough fidelity to hear the ball but not to capture what is being said on court.

Yes but nor audio

they didn't know about the video broadcast or only about the mic?

Only the mic

In the Hingis era it wouldn't have made headlines if she had said this stuff in a press conference.
A lot of stirring going on to make this irritable but balanced and unmalicious commentary from Pegula into such a scandal. Of course players should have known they were being recorded, but this could have been so much worse.

Hingis would talk trash in front of the mic mind you LMAOOOO

She called Momo half a man during Momo’s breakout run at the Australian Open in 99. OP is correct here unlike Jess,Hingis was deliberately malicious while in the press rooms in a lot of the shit she said. And back then the tours and majors dgaf so the idea of fines for homophobic and/or racist language was unheard of. Bad press was good press.

That Amelie played like a man and was "half a man"

You mean homophobia. Mauresmo isn’t trans

Big difference between knowingly saying something on the record vs something you said in private.

Her commentary was plenty malicious, a grown ass woman aiming to become a WTA official soon bullying and threatening a teen player.
