There is still one more tournament left for Alex Eala before she can officially put a bow on what has been a landmark season for Philippine tennis.
After spending much of 2026 establishing herself among the world's best, the Filipina heads to the Hong Kong Tennis Open for one final opportunity to add to an already impressive campaign, carrying the distinction of being the tournament's No. 2 seed.
The WTA 250 event, which runs from November 2-8 at the Victoria Park Tennis Stadium, marks Eala's final stop of the season and another opportunity to translate her growing reputation into a deep tournament run.
It has been a year of significant breakthroughs for the 21-year-old, who began the season at world No. 50 before climbing as high as No. 18 in the WTA rankings. Her maiden WTA title at the DC Open, a run to the fourth round of Wimbledon, and a third-round appearance at the US Open have helped establish her as a consistent presence against the tour's established names.
However, the Asian swing has presented a different kind of challenge for Eala, who has yet to find the same consistency that characterized her earlier stretches of the season.
As the Filipina tennis star suffered opening round losses in Singapore and Wuhan, and a Round of 16 result in Ningbo, Eala showed encouraging signs of regaining her form at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. She reached the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Diana Shnaider in a competitive three-set encounter, 6-2, 6-7(5), 4-6.
Hong Kong now gives her one last chance to turn those flashes into a more sustained run, which starts against a familiar foe in the first round.
Eala will begin her campaign against American Alycia Parks , setting up their third meeting of the season and a rubber match between two players who have already traded victories. Parks took their first encounter at the Australian Open in January, recovering from a first-set bagel to win 0-6, 6-3, 6-2, but the Filipina returned the favor at the Canadian Open in August, producing a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory to even their head-to-head record at 1-1.
The matchup presents an interesting opening test for Eala, particularly Parks' serve and aggressive first-strike tennis will require her to be sharp on return and disciplined in neutralizing the American's power. The biggest key will be finding opportunities to extend rallies, use her movement to force additional shots, and take control of points rather than allowing the American to dictate from the baseline.
Beyond her opening assignment, Eala will still have plenty of quality opposition standing between her and a potential title run.
A possible second round match might be versus Tereza Valentova , who has already defeated her twice back in the Qatar Open and last year in the Japan Open. She is also positioned in a field featuring top players and established tour contenders, including top seed Sorana Cirstea , surging third seed Leylah Fernandez , and fourth seed Maria Sakkari .
For Eala, the immediate priority is making the most of her final competitive opportunity of 2026 before looking back at everything she has accomplished.
Despite the challenges of the Asian swing, the Filipina remains eager to finish her campaign on a high note, entering Hong Kong with the motivation to put together one more strong performance before turning her attention to the offseason.
"I'm super excited, and I'm going in with high motivation," Eala said ahead of the tournament.
"I'm trying to put my reflections off for one more week because of said motivation. Check back in a week."
