You do know that "Vache" means Cow in French ? I am reading something very animal here 😆

Nice story for him at this stage of his career, but tbh he has the most boring game in the top 50

Fritz is one of the most extreme examples I've seen of someone playing worse the higher the stakes are he was terrible on big points this match the moment Turin seemed like a realistic goal again

He doesn't get as much attention as Medvedev or Zverev in their unclutch moments over the years because expectations aren't nearly as high but it's very noticeable

Honestly I think the worst Slam loss for the top players this year (in hindsight) was Fritz's blown lead to Cerúndolo (in his first 3R) at the US Open. Had he won, he would've had Blockx, then Khachanov, then Zverev (H2H advantage) for the chance to play a Grand Slam final against Ben Shelton and not Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner.

Like I know Fritz made the final at the US Open two years ago, but I think this year's edition was his best shot at a Slam, and it'll be hard to see him get another draw like that, especially with a lower seed. Even at Wimbledon he had a chance at the final but lost to Zverev (he was injured but Zverev was injured in a few of their previous matches).

The Sinner loss was admittedly painful, but he'll win Roland Garros eventually; Fritz might never win a Slam. This year could be the one that got away..

Yup I think it's not unlikely that Fritz will look back at that Cerundolo loss as the moment that his chances of winning a Slam slipped away

For years people have talked about "maybe if somehow he faces Zverev instead of Sinner or Alcaraz he'll win a Slam" well he had a chance to do just that and he lost from 2 sets up

2 sets and a break up in 3rd

Fritz isn't ever going to win a slam. But yes, missed opportunity for sure.

yeah I really think so too, this year’s US Open was his best chance to make another final and possibly even win this one?

but I’ve come to realise that fritz is v unclutch the moment there’s a realistic possibility of him accomplishing a major milestone…

not taking away from him making the final vs sinner at uso but otherwise he's had shocking losses at slams you wouldn't expect from a mainstay top 10 player. ymer, brandon holt, basavareddy off the top of my head

The weird thing is that he might still have a chance for ATP Finals, but it depends on the health of Cobolli and Fils. If they’re both available for Turin, he’s basically cooked, but if not, I think it’s still possible.

14. u/Money_Faithlessness3 · 2026-10-31 16:32 UTC

isn't cobolli out for the season?

15. u/Fried_falafel · 2026-10-31 17:25 UTC

Not at all, he’s posted that he’s still aiming to play Paris next week

ah cool

Absolutely, it's really frustrating as someone who finds Fritz likeable.

I got used to my favorite players losing to first the big 4, later Alcaraz/Sinner, but it's an incomparably worse feeling to see Fritz be in good form, on courts that he likes and favor his playstyle, draw opening up for him, no Sinner/Alcaraz in sight and then he loses to a player he'd otherwise beat 9 matches out of 10 if the stakes weren't there.

I don't think he'll ever again get as good a chance to win a slam as this year's US Open and he completely crumbled the match from a 2-0 sets lead. And he has several of these kinds of losses a year.

His loss to Nakashima in Cincinnati was the most unexplainable collapse I've seen from a player in recent times. Absolutely untouchable on serve for the whole match, should have been a straight sets win, but lost the tiebreak of the first set due to suddenly getting tense on serve after having been the much better player whole set. Comes back with a convincing second set win, breaks first in the third set, you think he'll steamroll the rest of the match, because up until that point Nakashima had nothing on Fritz' serve. But then Fritz completely collapses mentally and loses the next 4 games and the match in like 10 minutes spraying errors like crazy. And that was also a masters that he was in prime position to win.

Fritz gives me Roddick flashbacks. Promising, likeable player who just hasn't quite found "it" when he's needed to.

Roddick was a way better player than Fritz and won a major and many, many big tournaments!! Give roddick more respect!! Fritz wishes he was like roddick lool
