dude's got the number 1 ranking but can't beat anyone in top 10, that's some real paper champion energy

He's very much benefiting from playing in the worst field where everyone but Sincaraz have the floor of Mariana's Trench (and yes this absolutely includes 2026 Djokovic at this point)
Zverev is legitimately a great BO5 gatekeeper his Slam win rate vs. 11+ ranked guys since 2020 is like 92% but he's lucky to play in an era where peak has virtually no importance because everyone outside of Sincaraz will flop before you have to worry about dealing with them

Djokovic played pretty well vs struff. struff would have beaten most if not all players that night in Basel.

Overrated vulture… didn’t deserve to win 2 slams with his piss easy draws
6. u/Dependent-Effect6077 · 2026-10-31 19:28 UTC
I think it's that he's playing in the weakest era ever more than that he had easy draws it's just that people don't want to hear that because it also reflects badly on their own non-Sincaraz favorites
At every single Slam like half of the top 10 guys lose in the first week Zverev absolutely would not have this benefit if he was born in 1985 but it's very much a terrible reflection on the general field
The main guys who deserved it even less than Zverev are guys like Fritz who totally shit the bed when they had a chance to prove that they could win without Sincaraz in the picture
I feel bad for Berdych Tsonga and most of all Murray but not for anyone else in the current field because they've all proven that even in the easiest road possible they can't win anything at all

wouldn't the early 2000s era be weaker(like 2001-2003)? how is this the weakest ever.

Exactly
So extreme for no reason
9. u/Dependent-Effect6077 · 2026-10-31 19:44 UTC
That was the worst in terms of top-end talent but I think this has the worst 5-20 range
It's not just about that Zverev doesn't meet Sincaraz it's that he consistently doesn't meet literally anyone half decent at all until about the semis of many events

Weakest era ever? It hasn’t even been long enough to evaluate this time period in comparison to others
It’s been four years since sinner and alcaraz have started winning slams, far shorter than big 3 era or the ones that came before
Since when has the competitiveness of the world no. 10 been the standard by which an era is rated

This is exactly what I'm talking about lol
People will rightfully point out what a joke Zverev's competition is but the moment you make the obvious leap to it simply being what the field is you suddenly get pushback
Do you all seriously think that this field is weak for Zverev but strong for everyone else I don't think there's a secret "list of frauds" that only he's allowed to play against
12. u/calmrain · 2026-10-31 19:41 UTC
Hilarious how that person came to immediately prove your point. I don’t even know what to say lol.

It's hilarious how on a post that literally shows that this has been arguably the weakest year ever you still get a ton of "NO NO ONLY ZVEREV PLAYED BAD PLAYERS THE COMPETITON FOR EVERYONE ELSE IS GOOD" deniers lol
If Zverev has over 10000 ranking points but has only 3 top 10 wins the only logical conclusion is that an absolute ton of his points have been gained due to top 10 players losing early so he didn't have to face them

Ending a season with a record like that against top 10 players but winning two Grand Slams will be a fine quiz question in a decade or two. Man must have sold his soul for this season or something.
15. u/Dependent-Effect6077 · 2026-10-31 19:35 UTC
Honestly the irony is that pre-injury Zverev had the talent and capability to dominate and become #1 but didn't because he choked in best of 5 matches while current Zverev under any normal circumstance doesn't have that ability but became the version to get to the top anyway lol

Best player in the world who can't beat other top players
17. u/Trick_Support_3345 · 2026-10-31 19:28 UTC
He's not the worst N1 ever. There were worse like Rios. He should play less tournaments. He's getting older. Stop playing doubles.
nadal soderling was the most important match of Roger's career.
sinner cerundolo was the most important match of Zverev's career.
Zverev is extremely lucky to have "completed" tennis(N1, year end N1, Slam, atp finals, Gold, masters).
Medvedev is a far better player than him(14–8 h2h). Medvedev couldn't complete tennis. Zverev was more consistent.
18. u/Maria_gr · 2026-10-31 19:36 UTC
DVerev didn't complete tennis. Lol. That term is reserved for those who win all 4 slams, gold medal, ATP finals and all 9 masters.

No career slam
