Man I wish I could have this much fun while earning a living

Playing matches is good and all but training + eating + improving technique is also the part of it.

Also side gigs like advertisement+ press duties.

Also you're not always enjoying the game, the pressure is immense most of the time.

But yeah millions of prize money is nice. Though that's only for top players.

On the bright side, at least you still have a fighting chance at healthy knees by 40

imma ready to trade Federer knees with mine if I get that life...

Bro when you have billions, they will fucking repair your knees so well that you can still afford to play tennis at age 50.

I know you're half joking but to get to where they are requires insane amount of discipline and investment in time, energy, and money. None of these guys have normal childhoods. Their bodies are constantly in pain from young age, they have to train even when not feeling like it, etc. On top of that, you need to be gifted which is basically luck. There are people who train just as hard as them and never made it bc they have less talent.

Basically these are the survivors of a very brutal system. It's not like they sit on their couch go online hit apply to be a pro athlete then get to sit in AC all day for 8 hours.

I feel like Tommy Paul is the perfect example of how basic serve + FH stuff arguably matters more than all other aspects of the game combined

When you look at highlights he looks insanely good and he's capable of making touch shots that 90% of the tour can't come close to but his serve and FH being only average caps his ceiling by itself

7. u/eggoed · 2026-10-30 17:05 UTC

FH reminds me of Demon. It's like 90% of the time they just seem unable to really crank it.

8. u/Sometimes-funny · 2026-10-30 18:18 UTC

Tell me more about them cranking it

9. u/eggoed · 2026-10-30 19:35 UTC

Paywalled on my substack :(

I'd also add that he's incredibly fast so he's able to return one more shot

One of the former pro podcasts has talked about this. The American stereotype is big serve, big forehand, no backhand. It can get you pretty far in tennis but since the Sampras/Agassi era there has only been 1 American to win a slam (1 time) and he happened to be that exact stereotype.

You just need to be really solid in those other aspects of the game that don't normally matter as much to beat the top 5.

Best part of this clip was not included: Samu and Papacaraz both applauded the point TP won 😂

Half the reason I love Alcaraz is even though he lost this point he's just all smiles because he knows it was epic.

14. u/patiperro_v3 · 2026-10-30 17:40 UTC

For the love of the game.

I am jealous man, since this is how it feels when you have won in the game of life.

7 slams at 22 with net worth of more than 100 million and a loving family and friends.....hallmark would like to have a word with him, since even their movies are not this sweet.

Best part, not sure but he has always been so grounded. Lots of credit goes to parents, they did a very good job.

He had that strong mindset before winning anything. It's the other way around: it's not because of his achievements that he can enjoy himself, it's because he can enjoy himself that he's achieved a lot. And enjoying ourselves more is something we can practice every day.

I love how much Carlos loves TENNIS. Obviously he wants to win as much as everybody else, but I think above it all he just loves playing. You can see it oozing out him, even moreso on points he loses lol.

18. u/eggoed · 2026-10-30 17:04 UTC

It's so rare to see him get out-Carlitosed. That BH cross was crazy but love to see Tommy at net.

Paul played great and Alcaraz played out of his mind. If Paul had a better serve he would be top 5. He’s got all the other assets and does not have enough serve to hurt top players. He’s probably gotten higher than he should based on his game which is basic.

USA’s answer to Demon.
